The
Human Research Protection Office (HRPO) charges for Institutional Review
Board (IRB) review of research studies that are supported by industry or
other for-profit companies; this includes PI initiated studies supported by
industry. There will be no fees assessed for review of research studies
funded by federal or state agencies, not for profit foundations, or for
internally funded research.
Payment of IRB reviewing fees will be required for all research studies that
receive financial support from a for-profit sponsor, regardless of the
designation of the support, for
example: If you are only
receiving drug or device, IRB fees will not be charged, however, if you are
receiving any type of funding, for clerical or administrative support, IRB
reviewing fees will be charged.
IRB fees are non-refundable.
The fees are an assessment for the administrative costs associated
with IRB review. Because HPRO
commits its full resources to each review, the fees are due in full, even if
the study is not approved, participants are never enrolled, a research
contract is never executed, or the study is terminated before the study
objectives are achieved. HRPO
requires payment of the fees prior to releasing the study for accrual.
When HRPO
receives the study submission, an invoice will be processed using the
department number designated on the submission form.
In some limited extenuating circumstances, the IRB Executive Chair
may agree to modify the assessment of IRB fees, all requests must be
submitted in writing by the investigator and include a rationale for
requesting the fee modification.
It is the
principal investigator’s responsibility to incorporate the appropriate IRB
fees in the study budget and the contract and include the all applicable
institutional and department overhead charges.
